FAQs

Practically speaking, what does the program offer?

The program helps students think independently, analyze information, and express their thoughts in writing, while developing academic skills in both Ukrainian and English. They will also learn to work collaboratively, listen to others, build confidence through discussions and speaking, and gain experience with university-style learning in preparation for higher education.

Why go through a difficult selection process?

The selection ensures that motivated and interested children are chosen, those ready to work actively for three weeks. This guarantees the effectiveness of learning. It also allows students to improve their English through focused practice, making sure everyone can keep up and benefit fully from the program.

Why spend three weeks of vacation?

During this time, students will acquire skills that usually develop over the course of a year and will be better prepared for school and, moving forward, university. Students gain the ability to think through writing, analyze complex texts, construct arguments, and present their own viewpoints; in times of war, the need for these skills grows even more as they help young people remain resilient, focused, and capable of making thoughtful decisions. They will also strengthen their English language skills, building confidence to read, write, and communicate more clearly. In this way, three weeks are an investment in a student’s near future.

Does the program help with university admission?

Yes. Students will learn to write clear and logical texts, think critically, and analyze information, skills that are important for essays and admission interviews, which provide with:

  • a stronger academic profile for admission to universities both in Ukraine and abroad;

  • an advantage in competitions, essays, and interviews, as participants learn to write reflective and analytical texts which are formats needed for motivation letters and personal statements; and

  • experience with internationally recognized methodology of Writing and Thinking used at Bard College and Bard High School Early College.

Note: Students need basic English understanding and speaking skills but don’t need to be advanced. Effort, willingness to participate, and being open to making mistakes are what matter. Everyone can improve and gain confidence in reading, writing, and sharing their ideas.

Many students wait until their final year of high school to start university preparation. Why waste time?

The program does not replace academic preparation. It creates the foundation without which effective preparation is impossible. A student who can:

  • concentrate,

  • analyze,

  • structure their thoughts,

  • work with texts

will strengthen their readiness for admission.

What is the connection with Kyiv School of Economics? Will there be any bonus?

Bard College is a partner of Kyiv School of Economics. The program’s “bonus” lies in the unique skills that are recognized in the international academic community and the quality of the learning experience on shared institutional premises.

Will participating in L&T Kyiv, supported by Bard College, help a student gain admission to Bard College itself?

Participation in the program does not guarantee admission to Bard College. However, it improves academic skills, writing abilities, and critical thinking, qualities highly valued in the admissions process. Additionally, familiarity with Bard’s methodology and studying within a shared institutional framework gives students a competitive edge and makes preparation for personal statements and interviews more effective.

Are parents required to attend the meetings in January and/or in the summer?

No, parents are not required to be present. The students will work independently, and parents may attend open events during the program’s selection process (in winter) and during the program itself (in summer), or they can receive updates about their child’s progress weekly and at the end of the program.

Why is this useful for the student?

  • Develops critical thinking and independence.

  • Increases motivation to learn.

  • Builds skills for future university, life, and English confidence.
